By the Seashore Discovery Collection

Meet six little seashore characters and build the language, knowledge and early literacy skills children need to become confident storytellers and readers.

Take a journey beneath the waves with Sylvie the Sea Star, Alby the Anchor, Tilly the Tide, Penny the Pincer Crab, Iggy the Invertebrate and Nori the Nudibranch.

Through fascinating facts, thoughtful conversation, sound play and beautifully illustrated stories, children will build their knowledge of the seashore while developing the language and literacy skills that sit beneath reading.

Each character introduces a new world to explore - and a new SATPIN sound to notice, hear and play with.

What's included?

🌊 Build Knowledge & Vocabulary
Explore fascinating seashore concepts and introduce children to rich, topic-specific vocabulary. Learning new words in a meaningful context helps children build the knowledge they need to understand and talk about the world around them.

💭 Wonder & Talk
Thoughtful Remember, Explain, Reason and Imagine questions encourage children to recall information, explain their thinking, make connections and imagine possibilities. These conversations give children opportunities to use new vocabulary and develop increasingly complex language.

📖 Six Original Stories
Meet Sylvie, Alby, Tilly, Penny, Iggy and Nori through beautifully illustrated stories. The stories revisit ideas and vocabulary from the knowledge learning, helping children hear and understand new language in a meaningful context.

🗣️ Retell
Visual retell prompts help children identify important parts of a story - who, where, what happened, feelings and actions - before putting the whole story back together from beginning to end.

The First… Then… Finally… scaffold supports children to organise their ideas into a connected narrative and retell the story in their own words.

🔤 Sound Detectives
Play with three important areas of phonological awareness: beginning sounds, rhyme and syllables.

Children choose words from their little world, say them aloud and listen closely to the sounds and beats within them. They then return to the Story Cards, listening for words that begin with the same sound, rhyme or contain the same number of syllables.

The activities keep sound play connected to meaningful vocabulary and the stories children already know.

SATPIN Sound Play
Across the six characters, children are introduced to the sounds s, a, t, p, i and n - the first phase of the Wonder Days phonics progression.

Why knowledge and language matter

Learning to read is about much more than knowing letter sounds.

Children need knowledge about the world, a rich vocabulary and strong oral language to make sense of the words and stories they encounter.

That's why the learning in this pack is connected.

Children learn something → talk about it → hear it in a story → play with its sounds → retell it in their own words.

The repetition helps new knowledge and vocabulary become familiar, while the stories give children a meaningful reason to listen, think and communicate.
